Frequently asked questions

Where does Sumak Terra cacao come from?

From ancestral trees over a hundred years old in Manabí and Esmeraldas, Ecuador, grown by generations of smallholder farmers in the chacra system: the cacao grows among other species and takes on their aromas. The chocolate is made in Quito, Ecuador.

What is in the chocolate?

The 25 g bars contain cacao paste, panela and cacao butter; some add fruit, nibs or salt. The 50 g bars contain cacao paste, cane sugar, cacao butter and sunflower lecithin. None have added flavourings. Every product page lists the full ingredients.

How much do they cost?

25 g bars are €6, 50 g bars are €10, and the tasting box with all seven 25 g bars is €36 (seven for the price of six).

Which countries do you ship to?

Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Ireland and Austria from Spain; and Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil and Chile from Ecuador.

How much is shipping?

€5.95 in Spain (2 to 4 working days), €12 in the European Union (4 to 8 days), €5 within Ecuador (2 to 5 days) and €20 to the rest of South America (5 to 12 days). Free over €50 in Spain and the EU.

How can I pay?

By card, Bizum or Apple Pay, through Stripe. Payment happens on Stripe's secure page; the shop stores no card details.

Is the chocolate vegan?

Rose Mermel is white chocolate made with coconut milk: lactose-free and suitable for vegans. The dark bars contain no dairy. Coco Rush contains almond, so it is not suitable for tree-nut allergies.

How should chocolate be stored?

Somewhere cool and dry, between 16 and 18 °C (Rose Mermel, 14 to 18 °C). Avoid the fridge: humidity spoils the texture and the shine.

What does fine-flavour cacao mean?

It is the category the International Cocoa Organization reserves for cacao with distinctive aromatic profiles, as opposed to bulk cacao. Ecuador produces a large share of the world's fine-flavour cacao, mostly of the Nacional variety.

How much of a purchase reaches origin?

10% of every purchase goes to the cacao-growing communities of Manabí and Esmeraldas.
